My studies for the Best of Breed series of sculptures [2015] focus on medical conditions caused by hereditary defects in pedigree dogs and are developed by specific breeding measures. The concrete sculptures were based on pathological imagery of tumour diseases. What I found interesting in the medical images is that the organs or tumours stood out from their context in colour and scale, and that their actual meaning is difficult to understand for a lay observer. I use the freedom of interpretation that this afforded to me in an approach that leaves room for coincidence and subjective observation. I created the concrete objects by pouring liquid cement into plastic film and shaping them with tape and string. I painted them with interference paint, which changes colour depending on the light situation, creating attractive optical effects. This paint is primarily used for tuning cars. I see similarities between tuning and breeding, as they are preoccupied in part with the outward appearance and result in some extreme interpretations by developing specific breed characteristics.
