The Filipp Rosbach Galerie Gallery is especially pleased to host the first solo showing by Katja Wiechmann. The young sculptress is a Master Student under Martin Honert at the College of Visual Arts in Dresden. Her work »winter 76«, which she showed a year ago at the »Grand Ouvert«, the gallery’s opening exhibition, found strong recognition.

Works 2007
»Elise, Emil, Kira, Johanna, Mathilde, Moritz, Johann, Elise, Lili, Anna«
10 busts, ca. 35 x 28 x 20 cm, epoxy resin, graphite; polyester, graphite
Ten busts are lined up like a group photo on unprepossessing white pedestals. A three-dimensional snapshot – incomplete; it shows lacunae. The depictions are based on different human models – laughing children with mouths wide open and unmistakable missing teeth. This so open and matter-of-course laughing is beautiful and yet creepy. The surface seems waxen and ungraspable. Pencil strokes emphasize striking features of the still-childlike physiognomy. The portrait busts are almost identical in their technical and material qualities. Only three of the ten busts seem yellowed in color. To underscore the impression of photographic snapshots, the portraits’ spatial extension is minimized.

»n.t.«, 45 x 180 x 135 cm, epoxy resin, colored pencil
Covers: one, two, three, four… more cannot be counted, but even more might be piled up, unseen. They have varying structures and are of extremely disparate materiality. Thick, warm, quilted, thin, and crocheted. They cover a sleeping woman’s entire body; even her head is partially hidden under covers. Only from the front are the lineaments of her face and closed eyes visible. The contours of the pile of covers make sense here, tracing the contours of the body. A moment. The sleeper is captured with polychromatic pencils. The setting seems sliding, perhaps atmospheric – not tangible. This enables a constant oscillation between the media of drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. The sculpture turns the phenomenon of loneliness outward and inside out.
