Sabine Dehnel | relocated #1
November 25, 2006 - January 17, 2007
Opening: Saturday, November 25 at 7 a.m.

Filipp Rosbach Galerie is pleased to present an exhibition with new works by Sabine Dehnel. This is her first solo exhibition with the gallery and in Leipzig.

Sabine Dehnel often works from photographs, snapshots by anonymous individuals, everyday scenes mostly from the 1970s. Initially, this results in collages and figurative paintings, which she then uses in a second step as models for the construction of backdrops and installations featuring elements and situations from these photos and pictorial spaces. In and against these sets, she then photographs people who adopt similar poses and wear similar clothes to those in found photographs, as well as painting parts of their bodies. In sets of pictures, she then varies a single element, such as a skirt, the fabric of a curtain in the background, or the covering on a deckchair. Here, meaning accrues to the details and fragments of the human body to the variations of a single motif and the poses involved. Without precise background information about how these pictures were made, the levels of installation, painting and photography in Sabine Dehnel's works can barely be told apart: a many-layered process of transformation, in which painting appears as photography and photography as stages painting, with total interpenetration of the two media.

Sabine Dehnel [*1971 in Ludwigshafen] works and lives in Berlin.
