Marianna Krueger »There is no place like home«
November 10 – November 24, 2007
Opening: Saturday, November 10 at 6pm

We are delighted to present, for the first time in this gallery, an exhibition of Marianna Krueger’s work.

Expanding upon and refining the thematic aspects of her previous pieces, Marianna Krueger’s »There is no place like home« continues to explore, here through the concept of ‘Heimat’ (literally: ‘home’), her fascination with identity, a notion central to her work. At once, the images’ motifs are consciously combined with a concrete sense of place (»Ausflug«, »Beste Freunde«) yet at the same time completely free of any specific social or cultural context (»There is no place like home«).

The images do not articulate a narrative; rather they discuss the ambivalence of the term ‘Heimat’ as, on the one hand, a self-sufficient, social and spatial environment and, on the other, as a contemporary, multi-media-inhabiting language which, whilst discarding reality and space, simultaneously creates a new, abstract identity. In this sense, the site of origin increasingly loses its meaning; in place of it, we find aspects of the individual, the dramatisation of a lived illusion (»Born on 1st of June 1926«). Traditional values, with regards to memories and acknowledgements of social patterns (»Partisan«, »Romeo & Julia«), are reduced to fragments of associated personality.
