Claudia Piepenbrock »Tabula rasa«
30 July—10 September 2016

Josef Filipp is pleased to present an exhibition with the newcomer artist Claudia Piepenbrock, who received the Katrin Hollweg Award this June. This award is one of the most important and endowed awards of all Art Universities in Germany. The work »Seitengang : 2 angepasste Wände, spiegelnd und lautlos« [2016]  which gained Claudia Piepenbrock the Katrin Hollweg Award can be seen in the exhibition »Heal the World« at the Weserburg – Museum for Modern Arts in Bremen until September 25th 2016. A second exhibition for the award winner is scheduled at the Gerhard Marcks Haus in Bremen.

All over the world and from very young ages, a simple technique is well known. Pulpe, Cartapesta, Paperclay or simply named Papiermaché is a mixture of used, soaked paper and paste and serves as modeling material. It has been used and advanced since centuries in many different situations. Similar to cooking, the way to achieve something extraordinary is the right combination of ingredients, added extras, temperature and details.

In one work cycle, Claudia Piepenbrock combines the paperclay structures with real life objects, exceptionally beautiful in the work »gravitation« [2014], a rampant object resting on walking sticks, as amorph as it is abstract, as funny as it is tragic, that was inspired by observing a regular and real situation, although the ability to recognize it was intentionally distorted.

In the two part work »Matratze« [2015] Claudia Piepenbrock seperated the foam with irregular cuts. This procedure resembles the traditional sculptural method, but she also creates palpable relics of a brute deconstruction. The two parts created with this method reveal themselves despite their disconnectedness as one unit, because you could fit them together with ease. The intense color of the foam adds to the haptic experience of this work.

The works of Claudia Piepenbrock are not only a very precise implementation of plastic, sensible materiality and corporeality, but can also be experienced physically in an impressive way.
