A conglomerate—a mixture of several pure substances—is a heterogeneous affair: five positions of students at the College of Printed Graphics and Book Art (HGB) in Leipzig confront four positions of academic staff. The diversity of the participants in the group exhibition contrasts with the simplicity of the show’s theme: it deals with reduction, minimalist abstraction, eliminating contextual form, the fundamental elements of design and gestalt. The participants’ attempts to create complex works with a reduced aesthetic come in a variety of media and genres.

At the heart of this gallery intermezzo is a kind of abstraction that places the onus on the viewer to develop the works into vivid figurative images—by focusing their eyes like a camera: nearer, farther, macro, tele—it is the beholders who perfect the form and identifies the image content, as they gradually bring the image into focus. Dots become figures, figurative details force us to complete them, fragments take on an aesthetic life of their own, dashes form landscapes, bright contrasts join to create interiors, delicate graphics and barely perceptible motifs on linocuts expand to become spaces or contract to become still lives.

The selected works are not initially intended as complete works in the conventional meaning, they are invitations to see things differently. At first glance, they appear to have no figurative subject, we complete them as we look more closely. This lesson in vision slows down the exhibition experience in an astonishing way and renders the distinction between the positions of students and academic staff obsolete. The responsibility of accompanying spectators through the exhibition is motivated to change their perspectives from work to work, and the show devotes these installations to this ambition.
